NUTRITION

At Busy Hands ‘n’ Minds, we understand the importance of the development of the whole child and our child-friendly and healthy food choices nurture children’s bodies and fuel brain development. Good nutrition is vital to children’s overall development and well-being and we believe that positive early experiences with food promotes healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime.
Our 4 week rotational menu is carefully designed to follow the guidelines set out in Canada’s Food Guide and includes a wide variety of nutritious foods that are different in colour, texture, flavour, size, shape and temperature.
Our child nutrition program includes a morning snack, a healthy lunch, an afternoon and evening snack (after 5:15pm). Our meals are prepared daily by our in-house Cook who has completed the Food Handler’s Certification and adheres to all health and safety regulations. Our menus always include a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, milk and our favourite dairy products while observing the needs of our children with food restrictions and allergies.

Through our family-style dining model, food is placed in serving dishes on the table and children are encouraged to serve themselves, when possible, using child-size serving utensils and small pitchers for their milk. Family-style dining develops self-help skills and encourages children to make food choices. A teacher sits with a small group of children and develops social skills such as mealtime manners and appreciation of foods from different cultures. Children are also more willing to try new foods when they eat with their friends.

Mini Chef Program

Children learn best by exploring with all of their senses and our monthly Mini Chef activity provides a culinary adventure enjoyed by all of the children. Our classroom cooking and baking activities encourage fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, cooperation and teamwork. Early concepts of language, math and science are also emphasized as children practise counting, measuring, sequencing, problem-solving, reading and following step by step directions.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthday celebrations are an important part of a child’s social development and are special occasions at our Centre. Your child will receive a birthday card and crown on his/her birthday and on the last Thursday or Friday of each month, our Cook prepares a birthday cake for each classroom in honour of all the birthdays celebrated throughout the month.
